TSRL, Inc., Awarded Phase II SBIR GrantTherapeutic Systems Research Laboratories, Inc. (TSRL) a biopharmaceutical research firm, has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a cyclic cidofovir prodrug for the treatment and prophylaxis of small pox infection during a potential bioterrorism attack. As a secondary indication, the cidofovir prodrug can also be developed as an oral therapy for human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections prevalent in immuno-compromised patients. TSRL will collaborate with researchers at the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California in this endeavor. The grant, providing $3M in research funding, is part of the federal government’s bioterrorism-related research program. Therapeutic Systems Research Laboratories (TSRL), Inc. is a privately held oral drug delivery specialty firm focused on R&D efforts to enhance the oral absorption of investigational and marketed compounds currently not suitable for this most convenient route of drug administration. TSRL has developed an oral drug delivery technology portfolio which addresses the three most common barriers to adequate systemic exposure of drug candidates when given orally: low aqueous solubility, poor intestinal permeability and high presystemic metabolism. TSRL is applying its technologies towards the discovery and development of oral therapies for infectious diseases and cancer.
